Mahendra Ved.

Mahendra Ved is a refreshing exception. I’ve known Mahendra for many years, perhaps more years than he might care to remember. We both belong to the Kutchi community of Bhatias – whose history Mahendra traces with engaging erudition – and in what was Calcutta, our mothers were close friends. The Mahendra I recall was a young man of clear, well-reasoned and ethical convictions, absent any trace of sanctimoniousness thanks to his innate sense of modesty and self-deprecation. After more than 50 years of being a wide-ranging journalist who has witnessed momentous events that have changed India and the world, Mahendra has retained these qualities, and they shine through in this book, as repeatedly does his moral and physical courage in the face of clear and present danger without any hint of vainglorious braggadocio.
